L’InstameetItalia5, il primo Instameet intercontinentale che si terrà il 26-27-28 giugno, come anticipato ospiterà 17 special guest da tutto il mondo. Abbiamo deciso di presentarveli uno alla volta, dedicando loro una breve intervista, affinché possiate conoscerli meglio. Oggi vi presentiamo Gareth Pon (@garethpon), da Johannesburg, Sudafrica. Filmmaker di formazione, la fotografia è stata un’evoluzione per lui naturale. A chi vuole usare Instagram consiglia di “non barare” e non farsi condizionare dal pensiero di conquistare follower.
Chi è Gareth Pon? Come ti descriveresti?
Sono un creativo, sognatore appassionato e viaggiatore spaziale in incognito. Adoro creare e aiutare chi mi circonda a scoprire il proprio potenziale.
Raccontaci di te come fotografo: quando hai iniziato a scattare?
In realtà ho iniziato come filmmaker. Ho preso un diploma in Visual Communication e mi sono laureato in cinema e TV. La fotografia è iniziata principalmente come un hobby. Sapevo come riprendere e ho imparato gli aspetti tecnici perché il cinema è abbastanza simile. Così la fotografia ha iniziato a piacermi e mi sono appassionato all’idea di poter catturare ogni singolo momento. Quando è stato lanciato Instagram ho iniziato a usarlo come altro spazio creativo e presto è diventato parte del mio quotidiano. Il mio viaggio nella fotografia è ancora in corso e continuo a sfidare me stesso durante il tragitto.
Tu usi sia la fotocamera che il telefonino per scattare foto. Da cosa dipende la scelta del device?
Ho sempre dietro entrambi, ma scatto di fatto con quello che mi trovo in mano in un dato momento. Credo che recentemente il mio focus sia più sulla possibilità di catturare emozioni e storie, più che preoccuparmi della tecnologia con cui lavoro.
Nelle tue foto c’è moltissima natura, tuttavia l’elemento umano è quasi sempre presente. Come credi che le persone nelle tue foto contribuiscano al successo del tuo stream?
Adoro fotografare le persone. Secondo me contribuiscono a rendere l’immagine più personale. L’elemento umano come soggetto delle foto aggiunge preziosi dettagli alla storia che voglio raccontare.
Raramente si vedono video nella tua galleria, invece. Cosa che suona un po’ strana, visto che sei un filmmaker. Credi che su Instagram funzionino bene solo le foto?
In realtà ero solito caricare un sacco di video, poi ho deciso di prendermi una pausa, per poi ricominciare di recente con le serie dedicate alle Finestre e ai Ritratti. Secondo me su Instagram si dovrebbero caricare sia foto che video, senza farsi limitare da ciò che potrebbero pensare gli altri.
Secondo te qual è il futuro di questo social network?
E’ difficile a dirsi, ma credo che i cambiamenti siano necessari per mantenere l’interesse verso lo strumento. Mi piace la presenza umana reale di Instagram; credo sia l’elemento di successo di questo social network. Per cui finché avrò la posibiiltà di viaggiare e incontrare nuovi amici sarò felice.
Se dovessi dare 3 consigli per avere successo su Instagram, a cosa pensi che le persone dovrebbero prestare attenzione?
1. Curare il proprio profilo, dato che è la propria galleria personale, presentata al mondo intero; 2. Essere social; l’interazione su Instagram è personale e genuina. Non dimenticate mai che dietro a una certa foto c’è una persona vera, che si è presa il tempo per catturare quel determinato momento; 3. Non barare. Ci sono un sacco di persone che si fanno prendere dai like, dai follower e dalla “popolarità” della piattaforma, ma se lasciate che queste cose abbiano la meglio su di voi, rischiate di perdere di vista ciò che davvero è Instagram e inevitabilmente questo avrà un impatto sul vostro modo di fotografare.
Ci sono dei profili che secondo te vanno necessariamente seguiti e non ci possiamo perdere?

So che sei Samsung Official Digital Imaging Ambassador per il 2015. Cosa significa questo per te?
Si tratta di una partnership attraverso la quale vorrei scoprire quale sarà il futuro del digital imaging per Samsung. E’ una grande esplorazione e qualcosa che diventa sempre più eccitante. E’ ancora in fase embrionale, ma penso che nel resto dell’anno ci saranno momenti molto interessanti da documentare.
Ci sono altri progetti cui stai lavorando e di cui ci puoi anticipare qualcosa?
Sì, qualcosa c’è… ma è ancora troppo presto per parlarne.

How would you describe Gareth Pon?
I’m a creative, passionate dreamer and an undercover space traveller. I love creating and helping others around me discover their potential.
Tell us about your story as a photographer: when did you start taking pictures?
I initially began as a filmmaker. I studied a BA in Visual Communication and majored in film and TV. Photography began more as a hobby, I knew how to shoot and understood the technical aspects because film is quite similar. I started enjoying photography more and the challenge of capturing a moment and when Instagram was launched I started using it as another creative outlet and it soon became something I did everyday. I’m still on a photographic journey, but I enjoy learning and challenging myself as I go.
You use both cameras and mobile phones to take pictures, what does your choice depend on? When do you decide to use one or another device?
I always have both with me, but I will take a photo with whatever is in my hand. I think my focus lately has been on capturing emotion and stories rather than getting too hung up on technology.
There’s a lot of nature in your pictures, but the human element is almost always present. How do you think the people in your pics do contribute to the success of your stream?
I love taking photos of people. They make the image feel more personal in my opinion. Placing a subject in your image also adds the human element and adds to the story I might want to tell.
Videos rarely appear in your gallery, which sounds odd as you’re a filmmaker. Do you think Instagram should only be about photos?
I actually used to upload a lot of videos but I decided to take a break. I’ve just started again however with my Windows and Portraits series. I believe you should upload both photos and videos and you should never limit yourself to what others may think.
What do you think is the future of this social network?
It’s hard to say. But I do feel that changes need to come to keep it exciting. I love the people element of Instagram, it’s always been the biggest draw card for me, so I guess as long as I get to travel and meet new friends I’ll be happy 🙂
Should you give 3 advices to succeed in Instagram, what would you suggest people should pay attention to?
1. Curate your profile, it’s your own personal gallery to the world.
2. Be social, Instagram interaction is personal and genuine. Never forget that behind that photo is a real person who took the time to capture that moment.
3. Don’t cheat. There are a lot of people out there who get caught up on likes, followers and the “popularity” of the platform, if you let these things control you then you forget what Instagram really is about and it will effect the way you take photos.

I know you’re Samsung Official Digital Imaging Ambassador for 2015. What does this mean to you?
This is a partnership where I’ve decided to seek out the future of digital imaging with Samsung. It’s a great exploration and something that has been exciting moving forward. It’s still in its young phase, so I guess the rest of the year will showcase all the most moments as they happen.
Is there any other project you’re working at you can give us some hints about?
There are some 😉 But I would rather not say anything just yet.
