Abbiamo deciso di presentarveli uno alla volta, dedicando loro una breve intervista, affinché possiate conoscerli meglio. Partiamo con Umit Savas (@umitko), da Istanbul, Turchia. Segnalata da Instagram come #LocalLens della sua città, è stata anche citata dal National Geographic, edizione turca.
Chi è Umit Savas e come hai scelto il tuo nickname su Instagram?
Umit Savas è un ingegnere chimico che vive a Istanbul ed è anche una Instagramer disperatamente innamorata della città in cui vive. Il mio nickname, “umitko” non ha un preciso significato, a dire il vero. E’ nato in un periodo in cui con gli amici ci divertivamo ad aggiungere suffissi buffi ai nostri nomi e -ko era uno di questi.
Quando hai cominciato a fotografare? Hai qualche ricordo speciale legato al tuo rapporto con la fotografia?
Ho sempre amato fare foto, ma questo sentimento si è trasformato in passione quando ho comprato il primo iPhone e ho scaricato Instagram, quattro anni fa. In effetti ho un ricordo molto vivido che posso raccontare: un giorno siamo andati a Haydarpasa per scattare qualche foto e improvvisamente sono comparse centinaia di uccelli in pochissimi minuti. Immaginate uno degli edifici più iconici di Istanbul, al tramonto e uno stormo, tutto nella stessa piazza. E’ qui che ho scattato una delle mie foto migliori, che mi è valsa la condivisione da parte di Instagram, che mi ha nominata sua #LocalLens di Istanbul (la stessa immagine è stata ripostata con sua citazione dall’edizione turca del National Geografica, ndr.).
Ritratti di persone e animali, ma anche paesaggi e composizioni creative popolano il tuo stream pieno di colori. Cosa ti ispira di più e perché?
Qualunque cosa può essere fonte di ispirazione per me: la mia motivazione più grande è condividere momenti speciali, persone che incontro e i luoghi che visito.
Hai anche un fotoblog attraverso il quale inviti i tuoi follower a raggiungerti in Turchia per far conoscere loro la tua terra. Da dove è nata questa idea e come pensi potrebbe evolvere?
Adoro viaggiare e siccome continuavo a condividere le mie foto con l’hashtag #letstraveltogetherinturkey (sì, in effetti è un po’ lungo) ho deciso di aprire un fotoblog per mostrare queste immagini in modo più ordinato e minimalista. Sto cercando di viaggiare sempre di più proprio per sviluppare questo progetto.
Se dovessi dare 3 suggerimenti fondamentali per avere successo su Instagram, cosa raccomanderesti?
Sicuramente di trovare uno stile, di essere creativi ed essere utenti attivi su Instagram.
Qual è lo stato dell’arte di questo social network in Turchia? Dalle tue parti c’è una straordinaria concentrazione di utenti che hanno migliaia di follower. Secondo te per quale motivo?
E’ vero, abbiamo tanti utenti con migliaia e anche milioni di utenti. Credo che dipenda dal “momento propizio”. Questi utenti sono stati estremamente attivi quando ancora Instagram era agli inizi, adoperandosi nella condivisione delle loro foto in modo regolare, interagendo con gli altri utenti per giorni interi (e anche notti), raggiungendo così sempre più persone, giorno dopo giorno. In questo modo è stato semplice per loro accumulare nuovi follower, ma oggi il numero di utenti che condivide foto bellissime è aumentato molto, per cui la gente è diventata molto più selettiva nello scegliere di seguire nuove persone.

Secondo la tua esperienza su Instagram, quale pensi sia il futuro di questa app?
Io credo che in futuro si concentreranno molto sui video.
E del tuo futuro come fotografa cosa ci puoi dire? C’è qualche progetto che ci puoi anticipare?
In effetti sto lavorando in ambito fotografico per qualche progetto speciale. Presto inizierò un lavoro legato ai ritratti dal titolo #beingtouristinistanbul per @istanbultourstudio. Fino alla fine di quest’anno invece continuerò con altri due progetti in corso, uno sugli street artists di Istanbul e l’altro legato al mondo di Guerre Stellari.

Who is Umit Savas and where does your nickname on Instagram come from?
Umit Savas is a chemical engineer who lives in Istanbul and an Instagramer who is madly in love with the city she lives in. My nickname “umitko” has not an exact meaning actually. It comes from the times when me and my friends adding some funny suffixes to end of our names to have fun and –ko was one of them.
When did you start taking pictures? Have you got any special memory related to “photography and you”?
I have always liked taking photos but it became my biggest passion after I purchased my first iPhone and downloaded Instagram four years ago. I have a very strong memory indeed; one day we went to Haydarpasa to take photos and suddenly hundreds of birds appeared in few minutes. Imagine one of the most iconic buildings of Istanbul, sunset and a covey in the same square. I had taken one of my best shots there and then Instagram shared it on their account and mentioned me as their #LocalLens of Istanbul.
Portraits of both people and animals, but also landscapes and creative compositions populate your smooth coloured stream. What does inspire you most and why?
I can be inspired by anything; my biggest motivation is sharing special moments I experience, people I meet and the places I’ve been.
You have a photoblog inviting your followers to Travel in Turkey together with you. Where did this idea come from and how do you think it may develop?
I love travelling and I was sharing the photos I took with my hashtag #letstraveltogetherinturkey (yes, it is a bit long ) and then I decided to start a photoblog to show people related photos in a more minimal and tidy way. I am planning to travel more to develop this project.
What are the 3 top hints you could suggest us to be successful on Instagram?
Have a style, be creative and be an active user.
What is the state of the art of this social network in Turkey? There is a concentration of users with thousand of followers there. Any reason for this?
Yes, we have many users who have thousands and even millions of followers. I think it is all about good timing.These users were so active at the earlier stages of Instagram. By sharing photos regularly and engaging other users’ photos all day long (even at nights), they have reached more and more people day by day. It was easy to gain followers back then, but now as number of users who share amazing photos increased so much, people are more selective about following new users.

According to your experience in Instagram, what do you think is the future of this app?
I believe there will be more video related updates in the future.
And what about your future as a photographer? Any projects you can tell us about?
I am planning practice photography on certain projects I am working on. Soon, I will start a new portrait project #beingtouristinistanbul for @istanbultourstudio. And until the end of this year I will continue on with another 2 projects. One of them will be about street artists of Istanbul and other one will be related to Star Wars.
